Education & Prizes
The Academy has a long-established role in Education and Training via its journal, Medicine, Science and the Law and annual programme of events, notably the Friends’ Dinner and the Ormrod and Lund lectures.
More recently a series of one-day educational meetings, named in honour of Sir Thomas Stevenson (1838-1908), the first official analyst to the Home Office, has been inaugurated. A series of evening events covering topics of a mainly historical interest are also being held in the Gordon Museum, of King's College London.

National Legal Litigation Prize
The British Academy of Forensic Sciences National Legal Prize offered to the student obtaining the highest mark in Litigation through the University of Law. A prize of £300 is awarded to the winner who will be invited to attend an Academy event to receive their award.

City Law School BPTC Prize
The British Academy of Forensic Sciences City Law School Legal Prize offered to the student gaining the highest mark in the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) through City University, London. A prize of £300 is awarded to the winner who will be invited to attend an Academy event to receive their award.

King’s College Science Prize
The British Academy of Forensic Sciences King’s College Forensic Science Prize. The top five project submissions from the MSc/MRes in Forensic Science are considered for this prize. A prize of £300 is awarded to the winner who will be invited to attend an Academy event to receive their award.

The BAFS Medical Prize
Historically BAFS awarded the David Paul Memorial Prize given to highly performing candidates in the Diploma in Medical Jurisprudence run by the Society of Apothecaries until the examination terminated in 2010. The last two David Paul Memorial awards were:
- 2005/6 to Dr Guy Beaumont
- 2009/10 to Dr Sarah Wilson
In 2018 BAFS decided to reintroduce a Medical Prize. All doctors and dentists below CCT/CCST completion and medical students from these professions are eligible to enter. Previous winners are exempt from further application for 3 years from the award.
The entrants will prepare a short presentation on a medico-legal or forensic issue that they will have to send as a PowerPoint file to contact@bafs.org.uk
The best 3 entrants will be shortlisted and invited to present their work in person to be adjudicated by a panel from BAFS Council members.
A prize of £300 is awarded to the winner who will be invited to attend an Academy event to receive their award. The first prize will be awarded on the 9th of December 2021.
The deadline for applications for the 2021 medical prize is 30th September 2021.

Join BAFS
BAFS welcomes applications for Membership from professionals with qualifications in medicine, science, or the law who have contributed, or are likely to contribute, to the application and practice of the Forensic Sciences. Applicants from within these disciplines who are interested, but lack experience, may be offered Associate Membership.
