Commander Ivan Balhatchet
Ivan Balhatchet joined Northamptonshire Police Service in 1997 where he carried out a variety of roles, mainly as a detective. He is a Senior Investigating Officer, Strategic Firearms Commander and was previously a Hostage Negotiator dealing with armed robberies, firearms and drug related crimes.
In 2015 he successfully passed the Police National Assessment Centre and attended the Strategic Command Course in 2016. In 2016 Mr Balhatchet headed the Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Command in London as Operational Commander. He was responsible for all high-profile sexual offences within London, including historic crimes. He then was appointed as the Metropolitan Police’s Commander for Intelligence and Covert Policing, responsible for establishing strategic working with key stakeholders, including Surveillance Commissioners. Ivan has also pioneered a number of high-profile policing initiatives such as ‘Live Facial Recognition’.
In July 2017 Mr Balhatchet was appointed the NPCC National Policing Lead for Honour-Based Abuse: Forced Marriage and Female Genital Mutilation, where he led on the design and implementation of a new HBA policing plan, was responsible for quality performance delivery as well as ensuring England & Wales Police Forces adhered to HMICFRS Recommendations and the Home Offices National Oversight Group, and made legislative changes to FGM/FM Protection Orders ensuring they were managed in an efficient and effective way, as well as obtaining preeminent criminal convictions for Forced Marriage & Female Genital Mutilation in England & Wales.
